Hello Beekeepers and Guest Visitors,
My name is Peter Saunders, Club President, and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Christchurch Hobbyist Beekeepers' Club.
Our Club has been active for over 50 years and currently has around 200 paid-up members. The Club is primarily geared towards the hobbyist beekeeper, that is someone who does not generally regard bees as their main source of income.
I am sure that you will not be surprised to hear that some of our members have only recently acquired a hive or two, while others claim (and look) to have been born with the bees. While many of our members have just a few hives, there are several who own a large number of hives and operate on a commercial or semi-commercial basis.
I firmly believe that the role of our club is threefold. Please allow me to explain this before you continue to explore the rest of our site. I hope that my explanation will show you the value and benefits of belonging to our Club and explain why the Club charges a membership fee.
The primary role of our Club is to share knowledge. By this, we aim to help our members learn about the art and craft of beekeeping and to share that information with new entrants so that they can become skilled beekeepers
and in turn help other club members.
Secondly, the Club aims to provide its members with the social opportunity to meet other beekeepers. This allows them to develop a sense of identity, community and belonging. These are recognized as essential for the long-term enjoyment of any hobby. You will see that the monthly Field Days held at our Club Apiary in Christchurch are a strong feature of our Club. Visitors and guests are welcome and there is always a hot cup of tea and something to snack close by.
And thirdly, our Club strives to provide members with benefits that are not available to non-members. Examples include access to the Club forum, the hire of club equipment and resources and bulk rate buying power.
We do have running costs and overheads as you would expect, but the main purpose of our annual subscription fee is to help the Club continue to provide these services now and into the future. A Club is only ever as strong as it members, so please join us and get involved as much - or as little - as you can.
